Biomolecular and Physiologic Process of Labor

Abstract
Limited understandings in the mechanism of normal labor preclude the elucidation of the pathogenesis of postterm pregnancy and preterm labor. In sheep, the mechanism of the initiation of labor is well understood primarily through he elegant
studies
of
Liggins and associates. However, since important differences in the endocrinology of human and sheep pregnancy were noted, no further breakthrough in the mechanism of the initiating human normal labor has been accomplished. The role of
prostaglandins in
the initiating of labor is well supported by many evidences. But the mechanism linking the endocrinologic changes during the end of pregnancy and the formation of the prostaglandins is not well understood. Physiology of smooth muscle contraction
and
associated calcium regulation have been extensively studied, although little study have been done on the interrelationship between prostaglandin formation and smooth muscle contraction. Biochemical changes of cervical maturation and its
relationship
with myometrial contraction appear to be more important the we believed in the past. The objectives of this paper is to summarize each component of the physiologieal process of human labor and their interrelationships. Finally possible
pathogenesis
of
the postterm pregnancy have been suggested.
